Maverick Memo
Clay Central/Everly Community School January 17, 2014 From the Superintendent’s Desk Mr. McClain Calendar Change
Due to the snow day on January 6, we will extend the end of the school year one day. The final day of classes will be Tuesday, May 27. Reading Assessments Next week, elementary students will be taking reading assessments as part of our Collaborating for Iowa’s Kids (C4K) program. The data will be used to assess individual students’ strengths and areas of improvement in reading skills and design lessons to improve those skills. Teacher Leadership and Compensation The Teacher Leadership and Compensation (TLC) program was instituted by the Education Reform passed this past session in the Iowa Legislature. Funding was set aside for all districts to research and plan for their districts. All 346 districts in Iowa requested and were approved this initial funding. Taking part in the TLC program will be a voluntary and competitive process. The Legislature approved $50 million for the first year of implementation during the 2014-15 school year. In each subsequent year through 2016-17, another $50 million will be added to the program, enabling all districts to eventually participate in the program if they choose. Each year, plans will be approved for roughly one-third of the state’s student population. Applications for the 2014-15 school year are due January 31, 2014. The overriding goal of the TLC program is to improve student learning by improving the instruction they receive each day. The TLC will accomplish this by focusing on five goals:
Districts will have three options to choose from for their TLC program. The first model is based upon the work of Iowa’s Teacher Leadership and Compensation Task Force. It would create Model, Mentor, and Lead teacher roles. Model 2 (Instructional Coach Model) includes 3 leadership roles: Model teacher, Instructional Coach, and Curriculum and Professional Development Leader. The third model, called the Comparable Plan Model, gives the districts some flexibility to design a plan that works within their district. It must includes the 5 “must-have” criteria that all teacher leadership and compensation plans must meet. The five requirements include: Minimum salary of $33,500; Improved Entry into the Profession; Differentiated, Multiple, Meaningful Teacher Leadership Roles; Rigorous Selection Process for Leadership Roles; and Aligned Professional Development. Clay Central Everly intends to apply in the first round. Within two to three years of beginning our program, we will have effective mentoring/relationships between lead and new teachers. Collaboration among our staff will facilitate effective implementation of programs including Multi-Tier System of Supports and Iowa Core. Ultimately, this will result in improved student achievement. From the Principal’s Desk Mr. Bush From the Counselor … Ashley Tessum 712-933-2242 (Royal- mornings only) 712-834-2227 (Everly- afternoons only) atessum@claycentraleverly.org We are pleased to notify you that Clay Central/Everly has been selected to represent schools across the nation by participating in the technology and engineering literacy (TEL) assessment for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). First administered in 1969, NAEP is the largest nationally representative assessment of what students know and can do in various subject areas. It is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from state assessments because it provides a common measure of student achievement across the country. The results of NAEP are released as The Nation's Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public. In our school, the TEL assessment will be given on January 30, 2014. Your child has been selected to participate. The assessment will be administered on laptops provided by NAEP, and will measure students’ capacity to use, understand, and evaluate technology as well as to understand technological principles and strategies needed to develop solutions and achieve goals. Students will complete problem-solving tasks based on scenarios reflecting realistic situations, as well as, multiple-choice and short-answer questions. In addition to subject area questions, students will be asked some questions about themselves and their educational experience. These questions provide contextual information for the assessment, as well as information that may be related to students’ learning. If you would like to view sample subject area and student questions, please visit http://nationsreportcard.gov/parents.asp. It will take about 120 minutes for most students to participate in the assessment. The results are completely confidential (in accordance with the Confidential Information Protection provisions of Title V, Subtitle A, Public Law 107-347), and the information provided will be used for statistical purposes only. Your child’s grades will not be affected. Your child may be excused from participation for any reason, is not required to complete the assessment, and may skip any question. While NAEP is voluntary, we depend on student participation to provide an accurate measure of student achievement that will inform improvements in education. Your child will represent many other students, so participation is very important. However, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify me in writing by January 24, 2014. There is no need to study in preparation for NAEP. We do, however, ask parents to encourage their children to do their best and get plenty of rest the night before the assessment. A brochure that explains what participation in NAEP means for you and your child is available at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pdf/parents/2012469.pdf. Should you have questions, please contact me at 712-834-2227 or at atessum@claycentraleverly.org. We are excited that our school will be participating in NAEP and pleased that your child has been selected. We know that CC/E's students will help us show what our nation’s students know and can do. Seniors and Parents of Seniors- Now is the time to start applying to colleges! It is recommended that each student applies to their top 3-5 schools. Applying to a college does not mean the student must attend that particular college, but it does help open doors to many possibilities while students try to narrow down their choices. Applying early also benefits students in the area of financial aid, grants, and scholarship opportunities. Applying too late may eliminate these opportunities. Over half of our seniors have already applied to a college, university, or trade school, so great job!!! If you need assistance in applying, please stop by my office during periods 6-8! Also, seniors, please remember to refer to your high school credit check sheet I sent you via Google Doc. The 2nd page of this document will provide you with important information for filling out college admission applications and scholarships! Your class rank, GPA, etc will be updated over Christmas break with your Semester 1 results. Good luck! Just a friendly reminder to students to be checking their school emails for important information from their counselor! Also, another reminder for parents and students to check the school website for important news, information, and updates under the Counselor’s Office tab. New Maverick Merchandise “Store” The Maverick Merchandise Store is now available ONLINE through the school website. You can purchase and customize your own merchandise through this website and have it shipped directly to you! Merchandise is no longer available to order through our catalog. FROM THE NURSE Holly Jungers, RN We have a lot of illness making its way into the CCE district. Stomach flu and strep throat are the main culprits, but we are also seeing some influenza in the area. We need your help as parents to help curb the spread of illness. Some simple guidelines to follow before sending your child to school are:
Always feel free to check in with the school and question whether certain illness or symptoms may be going around your child’s classroom. During this time of year, please err on the side of caution when making the decision to send your child to school in order to prevent rapid spread of illness through our school. Thank you for your support. ATTENTION: 6th and 7th GRADE STUDENTS The I-Smile program in Iowa will be offering dental screenings and sealants to 6th and 7th grade students in the CCE district.
